The Red Line trailer: Get a first look at Ava DuVernay’s CBS limited series

CBS has revealed an official first look trailer for The Red Line, the upcoming event series from executive producers Ava DuVernay (A Wrinkle in Time) and Greg Berlanti (Riverdale). Set to debut on Sunday April 28, after the conclusion of God Friended Me’s season finale, you can check it out in the player below!

The Red Line is a drama that follows the lives of three vastly different Chicago families whose stories of loss and tragedy intersect in the wake of the mistaken shooting of an African American doctor by a white cop. As the stories of the Calder, Young and Evans families crisscross and converge, a message of hope appears – it’s possible to emerge from tragedy stronger, and it’s important to come together with others, not just to survive, but to thrive.

The series stars Noah Wyle (The Romanoffs, Donnie Darko), and is produced by DuVernay and Berlanti, who serves as an executive producer on everything from The CW’s The Flash, DC Universe’s Doom Patrol, as well as CBS’ own God Friended Me. Caitlin Parrish and Erica Weiss are co-executive producers for Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios. Victoria Mahoney directed the pilot from a script by Parrish and Weiss.

Riverdale spin-off Katy Keene won’t crossover with flagship series

Last week it was revealed that The CW had ordered a pilot for Katy Keene, a musical dramedy spin-off of Riverdale. Speaking today at TCA, CW president Mark Pedowitz said not to expect any characters from the main series to show up in the new series.

RELATED: The CW orders Jane & Riverdale spin-offs, plus Lost Boys & Nancy Drew

“Katy Keene takes places years after Riverdale High School,” Pedowicz said (via Deadline). “There are no plans to do anything [regarding a crossover]. Any of the Riverdale characters who come to Katy Keene will be older. Robert [Aguirre-Sacasa] is getting the pilot right.”

Much like the Netflix adjacent Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the shows will have a shared branding with their basis in Archie Comics but won’t see any crossing over in the foreseeable future.

Katy Keene follows the lives and loves of four iconic Archie Comics characters — including fashion legend-to-be Katy Keene — as they chase their twentysomething dreams in New York City. The musical dramedy chronicles the origins and struggles of four aspiring artists trying to make it on Broadway, on the runway and in the recording studio.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Michael Grassi will executive produce alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater.

Yuen and Simmons are joined by an all-star ensemble that includes Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy), Seth Rogen (The Lion King), Gillian Jacobs (Love), Andrew Rannells (Black Monday), Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), Mark Hamill (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Walton Goggins (Tomb Raider), Jason Mantzoukas (John Wick 3: Parabellum), Mae Whitman (Good Girls) and Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley) amongst others.

The series is described as a suspenseful, action-filled, emotion-packed show that builds upon poignant and heartwarming moments of love, friendship, and humanity. The comic launched in 2003 and wrapped up last February after 144 issues had been published. Ryan Ottley served as the central artist on the Kirkman and Cory Walker created comics.

Sharon Yguado, head of scripted genre programming at Amazon Studios, said: “Robert has an uncanny talent to predict the zeitgeist, and we are incredibly excited to see him break boundaries in an animated one-hour format. We love his ambitious plan for the show and believe it will look like nothing else on television.”

“I couldn’t be more proud of the series Cory Walker, Ryan Ottley and I did together for over 15 years. To know our characters will live on in multiple iterations in other media is almost too exciting to bear! What Amazon is allowing us to do in animated form is nothing short of ground-breaking, and I can’t wait for our rabid fan base to experience it,” added Kirkman.

Charmed Season 1 Episode 11 Recap

Charmed Season 1 Episode 11 Recap

In the previous episode of The CW’s Charmed, the Charmed Ones rescued Harry from Tartarus, and Macy discovered that she and Maggie share the same father. In Charmed season 1 episode 11, Macy broke the news to Maggie and Mel.

Love Letters

Unfortunately, Mel and Maggie didn’t take the news well, despite Macy’s excitement at another clue. Mel felt that she didn’t know Marisol if she kept so many secrets. For Maggie, it was a lot to handle after Parker and her stint in Tartarus.

Macy cast a spell to help her find the truth. She found a box of old letters between her father, Dexter, and Marisol. They wrote to each other up until he died and were still in love. He knew about Maggie and would give Marisol updates on Macy. However, when Macy shared the letters with Maggie, they found another devastating secret. Dexter and Marisol had done something to bring Macy back from the dead that could be unforgivable.

The Maestro

Charmed Season 1 Episode 11 Recap

The director of the Hilltones, the college’s acapella group, went to Athens and found an old pitch pipe. Mr. Miranda blew into it, and a demon possessed him. Maggie auditioned for the group right after hearing the news, and he loved her sad take on a normally happy song. Lucy was also in the group. They were on good terms. However, Lucy had an acapella nemesis, Effie, who always got the solo.

Mr. Miranda had the Hilltones drink a special tea. He arranged a mournful, dissonant version of “Killing Me Softly”, and gave Effie the solo. When she suggested something more upbeat, he trapped her soul. When Mr. Miranda said Effie quit and gave the solo to Lucy, Maggie touched the pipe hanging around his neck and heard Effie screaming for help.

The Book of Shadows told them that sirens used the pipe, so at the big performance, Maggie tried to vanquish him with a spell for sirens. Unfortunately, he wasn’t a siren, but their director, The Maestro. The notes the girls were singing were trapping the audience’s souls. They needed the Power of Three to vanquish him, but they needed to clear the air first. Galvin played “The Devil’s Tritone” on the pipe to release the trapped souls inside. Maggie got the Hilltones to sing a mash-up to reverse the effects of the song on the audience.

Immediate Justice

Charmed Season 1 Episode 11 Recap

Unfortunately, Niko was there; she had been taking pictures of Mel and Jada. She was working as a private investigator. Niko warned Mel about Jada being part of a cult. Mel told Jada about Niko and the investigation.

The Loudest Voice in the Room first look reveals Russell Crowe as Roger Ailes

Following the Showtime TCA panel, Blumhouse shared a first look photo of Russell Crowe as Roger Ailes in the upcoming limited series The Loudest Voice in the Room. Check out the full photo below of Crowe’s mind-blowing transformation!

Based on extensive reporting by Gabriel Sherman for his bestselling book, The Loudest Voice in the Room, the series stars Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Russell Crowe (GladiatorA Beautiful Mind) in the title role and Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts as Gretchen Carlson. Sienna Miller (Layer Cake) will play former NBC news producer Elizabeth “Beth” Ailes. Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) will portray Brian Lewis, with Simon McBurney (The Theory of Everything) as Rupert Murdoch, and Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders) as Laurie Luhn.

In today’s politically charged media landscape, no figure looms larger, even after his passing, than Roger Ailes, molding Fox News into a force that irrevocably changed the conversation about the highest levels of government. To understand the events that led to the rise of Donald Trump, one must understand Ailes. The upcoming limited series takes on that challenge, focusing primarily on the past decade in which Ailes arguably became the Republican Party’s de facto leader, while also touching on defining events in Ailes’ life, including an initial meeting with Richard Nixon on the set of The Mike Douglas Show that gave birth to Ailes’ political career and including the sexual harassment accusations and settlements that brought his Fox News reign to an end.

Told through multiple points of view, the limited series aims to shed light on the psychology that drives the political process from the top down. Sherman co-wrote the initial episode of the limited series with Oscar winner Tom McCarthy (Spotlight). For the primary source material, The Loudest Voice in the Room, Sherman interviewed more than 600 people.

Crowe also serves as an executive producer on the series. Emmy nominee Kari Skogland (The Handmaid’s Tale) will direct the first two episodes.

The project is a co-production from Showtime and independent studio Blumhouse Television (Sharp ObjectsThe Normal Heart). In addition to Crowe, McCarthy will executive produce with Emmy winner Jason Blum and Alex Metcalf, as well as Marci Wiseman and Jeremy Gold for Blumhouse Television and Liza Chasin (Darkest Hour) of 3dot Productions.

The 10-episode limited series, coming from The Good Fight creators Robert and Michelle King and showrunner Peter Moffat (The Night Of), was originally ordered by the network in October 2017 and is set to explore the various levels of New Orleans society. Cranston is set to play a respected judge who engages in a game of lies, deceit and impossible choices following his son’s involvement in a hit-and-run.

“Peter, Michelle and Robert have crafted an original thriller with gut-wrenching suspense, raw emotion and moral complexity,” Showtime entertainment president Gary Levine said. “And we are simply ecstatic that Bryan Cranston, one of the planet’s finest actors, shares our enthusiasm and has agreed to play the lead. I can’t wait to shoot Your Honor and show it to the world!”

Cranston is attached to executive produce the series alongside the Kings and Moffat, who will write multiple episodes including the pilot, and production is slated to premiere sometime this year in New Orleans.

Moffat has previously worked in primarily English television, with the first season of his acclaimed crime drama series Criminal Justice being developed for American audiences in the form of the HBO crime thriller The Night Of, which was nominated for 12 Emmys and won five, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for Riz Ahmed (Venom).

Cranston has made a name for himself in television for over two decades with minor roles on Seinfeld and The King of Queens before making it big with the acclaimed 2000 sitcom Malcolm in the Middle and returning with the 2008 crime drama Breaking Bad, which earned him four Emmys for his lead performance and is considered by most to be one of the greatest shows of all time.

10 Best Tilda Swinton Movies

10 best Tilda Swinton movies

10 Best Tilda Swinton Movies

Independent filmmaking’s favorite weirdo, Tilda Swinton is the pale, ghost-like Englishwoman that so many casting directors have flocked to in recent years. With nearly 100 acting credits to her name over the course of a career that has been going strong since the mid-80s, Swinton is currently one of cinema’s most valuable assets. She’s even managed to make her way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, somehow. While she might appear in bigger films from time to time, there’s no denying that filmmakers who allow Swinton to work in interesting roles end up with far greater end results. She’s not afraid to play someone old, someone young, someone human, or someone alien. Swinton’s range is impeccable and her talent immeasurable. Her filmography is proof enough.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

10 best Tilda Swinton movies

Her second of multiple collaborations with Wes Anderson, Tilda Swinton is almost completely unrecognizable in 2014’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. Starring in an important role as Madame D., Swinton is donned in prosthetics that completely transform her from a middle-aged woman to an elderly one. It’s one of the most absurd things she’s done so far… until Suspiria rolled around in 2018.

Moonrise Kingdom

10 best Tilda Swinton movies

Her first Wes Anderson film is actually somewhat normal. Swinton is playing a character referred to and credited as Social Services, showing up to take a look at both families of the young couple that runs away early on in the film so they can be together without judgment or interference. Her standard brown hair is replaced with high orange curls here, but she’s otherwise more or less herself here.

Adaptation.

10 best Tilda Swinton movies

From director Spike Jonze and writer Charlie Kaufman, Adaptation. sees Tilda Swinton playing Valerie Thomas, a woman in Hollywood who bought the rights to hit nonfiction book The Orchid Thief who seeks out Kaufman to write a feature film adaption of the source material. Based on his real-life struggle to make something out of the book, Adaptation. follows Kaufman as he can’t help but insert himself into the story’s narrative in order to create something meaningful. Swinton’s key here, and it’s one of the first instances of her making a real impact on American audiences.

Isle of Dogs

10 best Tilda Swinton movies

Swinton’s third Anderson project, Isle of Dogs, utilizes nothing but the actress’s voice. It’s a stop-motion animated project in the same vein as Anderson’s 2009 hit Fantastic Mr. Fox, with Swinton playing a little dog named Oracle. It’s unlike anything she’s done before, but it ends up being a really funny part.

We Need to Talk About Kevin

10 best Tilda Swinton movies

A compelling and oftentimes hard-to-watch drama, We Need to Talk About Kevin features an all-time great performance from Swinton. She’s the mother of a troubled kid named Kevin, a child who grows increasingly concerning as he gets older. Whether it’s the things he says or the things he does, Kevin is a real risk to Swinton’s character and everyone around them. Swinton’s a total natural here, even if the film sometimes feels a bit flimsy.

Suspiria

10 best Tilda Swinton movies

Luca Guadagnino’s 2018 remake of the 1977 cult classic of the same name sees Swinton playing multiple roles instead of one. It’s something not uncommon for her — she has a dual performance later on in this list as well as in the Coen Brothers’ 2016 comedy Hail, Caesar! — but Suspiria takes it to a whole new level. She’s a chilling headmaster named Madame Blanc, a creepy old man named Dr. Joseph Klemperer, and a third (surprise!) role, as well. This movie might not be for everyone, but it’s worth it for these performances alone.

Only Lovers Left Alive

10 best Tilda Swinton movies

Jim Jarmusch and Tilda Swinton are kind of like a match made in heaven. He loves to examine humanity through his own poetic lens, often operating without interference from a major studio. Only Lovers Left Alive is a 2013 vampire-rock-comedy that costars Tom Hiddleston in addition to Tilda Swinton. It’s equal parts style and substance, due largely to the talent on-screen.

Orlando

10 best Tilda Swinton movies

Sally Potter is a filmmaker that often lays low — her movies are well-received, but they never manage to get the wide release they deserve. Still, they find an audience anyhow. Orlando, one of her earliest films, stars Swinton and Billy Zane in a period drama about a nobleman who is cursed to remain forever young by Queen Elizabeth I. It’s one of the more interesting films she’s done so far, with her performance surpassing everyone else’s in the film.

Okja

10 best Tilda Swinton movies

One of Netflix’s greatest original films, Okja sees Swinton playing twin sisters — both equally unpredictable and loony. Their names are Lucy and Nancy Mirando, and they want nothing but the worst for the lovable beast named Okja. It’s a touching monster movie with a heart, almost like E.T. and The Iron Giant rolled into one. Swinton’s doing her very best here and it really shows.

I Am Love

10 best Tilda Swinton movies

One of Suspiria director Luca Guadagnino’s earlier films, I Am Love, follows Tilda Swinton as Emma. She leaves Russia to go live with her husband in Italy, but her life still feels unfulfilling (despite being a powerful member of a powerful family). It’s a stunning film, and Swinton is part of why it feels so captivatingly bold and fresh.
